What are the advantages and disadvantages of living in Jacksonville, Florida?
I am interested in moving to Jacksonville, FL in the future after the year 2010. If I choose to move there, I might have to live on my own having no family and/or friends around and not being married. If I choose to relocate to Jacksonville, what are the advantages and disadvantages for a single individual to adapting to the changes of the surrounding that I will be living in? If I was to relocate to Jacksonville, I would be moving from the State of Georgia.

- You can go swimming! Bad thing: Get Sun burn
- The advantages are the weather, the beaches and rivers, and cost of living. The disadvantages are once again the weather, (hurricanes) the pay scale is low, and traffic is awful.
- The beach side is nice and right now the days are great in the 70's. It is a very large city with lots to do.
- Jacksonville is a great place for a young person to live. It's also a good place to raise a family. Advantages: Close to public beaches (Jacksonville Beach and the Naval Base beach. Plenty of night life, on the river, in Jacksonville Beach, and all around. The Jacksonville Zoo. The Science Museum. The Jaguars Football. The marinas and docks. The IntraCoastal Waterway. Access to I-95. Access to Amtrak. Access to air and sea travel. Career and job opportunities. Great urban park systerm. The cons: Crime Inadequate higher education (There are vo-tech opportunities). The heat and humidity. Urban sprawl. Inadequate mass transit (there are buses, but I can't vouch for the reliability or the frequency. Maybe someone else knows) Urban decay. Segregation in housing and development. Housing may be either expensive or inadequate. Be prepared to slum it. I don't know anything about the library system, or the University of Florida in Jacksonville. I can tell you it's a city worth exploring. My daughter wants to live there. I prefer Savannah, but if I got a good job there, I'd move there in a heartbeat.
- well hajgora said some things but here are a few others.... the cost of living is low. there are plenty of jobs - if you're willing to work there are gobs of things to do depending on where you're fomr - it's not NYC or Chicago by amy means. the people are generally some of the nicest you'll ever meet - when they say hi how are you - be prepared to asnwer and see them actually listen. it's highly baptist but this Catholic isn't looked down upon and we have a large community as well. it's growing by leaps and bounds. have a decent car THE LAST HURRICANE THAT CAME THROUGH WAS IN THE LATE 60'S. two years ago we have a bit with the tornado's of the hurricanes but only 4 houses were beyond repair. land mass it's the third largest in the US (the others are in alaska!) i moved here - not even knowing wher eit was in 2000. i have oddles of friends and a wonderful job. leaving would be a heartbreaking experience. be prepared for lots of Red White and Blue. when you see fighter jets and military aircraft fkying about - don't duck and cover - we have an air base. when you're at the beach and see the battleships and cruisers, etc - don't worry you're not being invaded - we have a fleet base.... just u the road is a sub base - but i doubt you'll see them ; ) UNF is a great school from what i hear tell -highly accredited. if you want more information - please don't hesitate to email me!
- i see no advantages.
- i live an hour south of jax, and i don't much care for it. it has some nice areas, but no soul. mostly chain restaurants and malls. also, if you are not a baptist churchgoer be prepared for some hassle at work. I've been at jobs where the first thing anyone asks you is what church do you go to? and then try to convert me. not trying to insult any jacksonvillians, this is just my opinion and what my experience has been. but i would never move anywhere before visiting a few times to see what it's like
