How do I find out the demographics of a town or specific areas in a town?

I am planning on purchasing a home in the next couple of years in a location I'm unfamiliar with. How do I find out the demographics of an area(s) before I purchase my home?

  1. excellent question! Go to ChamberofCommerce.com and type in the name and state of the city you are moving to. It will give you a website for that chamber - or at least a phone number you can contact... they will have all that demographic stuff on their website! If you call the Chamber of Commerce, they have booklets and all sorts of info packets as well as coupons for new residents... its actually a pretty cool place to visit - and you'll find out all sorts of stuff... where to shop, transportation info, crime statistics... very interesting stuff and most of them are eager to help you out.
  2. Real estate agents are normally prohibited from answering questions about good/bad neighborhoods and areas. Check with police stations and talk to local people online or in person. Amazing what you can learn/hear at the local coffee shop, and just about every town has one. A great website for USA info is www.city-data.com Loads of demographics there.
