What are the demographics of people who play RPGs, past and present?

What are the demographics of people who play role-playing games such as Dungeons & Dragons, back when the first came out, and today? I have the impression that this is a thing for young or teenage boys, but I'm wondering, did they keep playing these games as they grew up? Have girls gotten into these games these days? Are these games still popular or did they sort of rise and then fall?

  1. i don't know the official answer here, my OPINION is that role playing games are an addiction! I am a grandmother (yes i have 4 grandchildren) and I am an original gamer, i played "pong" it was the first home video game system and i would never buy it today ;) i raised all of my kids with video games we were the first on the block to own the atari system and the nintendo system etc. those kids all still play video games and love rpgs (the youngest is 18 and the oldest is 36) my grandkids all love video games as well when our family gets together we have video game battles and every tv in the house has a different system going on it rpgs are a safe outlet for your aggressions and none of my family is violent or would hurt a living thing in real life, again this is strictly my opinion but the family that plays together grows up to be responsible, healthy, and safe
  2. Well, I can tell you that RPGs are a great interest to college students (mostly males). Although many females are getting into them for various reasons. I can also inform you that I am a 21 year old female, recent college grad, and I love RPGs. I never played Dungeons and Dragons, but I prefer the Final Fantasy series. yes, I know, I'm a bit late on them but I always seem to lose interest before I can successfully complete the game. lol. Good luck to ya!
